Testimonial: NORPOD Fellow Sara Palomino Echeverria visits NCMBM
Sara Palomino Echeverria is part of the first cohort of NORPOD Fellows, the joint postdoctoral programme of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine.
She began her fellowship in autumn 2024, working between Anniina Färkkilä's group at FIMM in Helsinki and Mariike Kuijjer's group at NCMBM in Oslo. Her project "Unveiling the spatial regulation of chemoresistance in ovarian cancer" combines both groups’ expertise in ovarian cancer research and in computational approaches to study regulatory networks.
During her recent visit to NCMBM, Sara sat down with us to share what the experience has been like so far.

Collaboration in action: New study identifies SIT1 as a key regulator of human immune responses
A collaborative study has identified the protein SIT1 as a critical regulator of T cell activation and immune balance in humans.
Published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the study provides important new insights into how the immune system is controlled and how disruptions in these mechanisms can contribute to immunodeficiency and cancer.

Reading the history of epidemics in pathogen DNA: Andrew Magee joins MIMS
We spoke to phylodynamicist Andrew Magee who joins The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) as a new Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) Group Leader. He is joining the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, bringing evolutionary modelling to infectious disease research to ask how we can make the hidden history of outbreaks legible, and useful, for epidemiology.

From HIV to bird flu: Meaghan Flagg brings a new lens to lung repair
We spoke to virologist and stem cell biologist Meaghan Flagg who joins The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) as a new EMBL-style group leader. She is joining the Nordic EMBL Partnership with a mission to understand, and ultimately treat, the severe lung damage caused by emerging respiratory viruses.

Spotlight on Dongkyun Lim, NORPOD Fellow
We spoke with Dongkyun Lim, the 6th NORPOD Fellow at the Nordic EMBL Partnership, who has just started as postdoctoral fellow in the groups of Charlotte Boccara at NCMBM, and Thomas Kim at DANDRITE. His project focuses on how the lack of sleep after birth affects brain cells and their support systems.

Bringing postdocs together for inclusive research culture workshop at NCMBM in Oslo
As part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine (NEP), the Norwegian Centre for Molecular Biosciences and Medicine (NCMBM) recently hosted a two-day workshop in Oslo titled “Shaping Culture: Training for an Inclusive and Collaborative Research Environment.”

Spotlight on Charlène Sueur, NORPOD Fellow
In this interview, we caught up with Charlène Sueur, a NORPOD fellow whose work focuses on understanding how gene regulatory elements drive colorectal cancer progression and therapy resistance. She is working with Biswajyoti Sahu at NCMBM and Arafath (Rafa) Najumudeen at FIMM.

Spotlight on Lei Xia, NORPOD Fellow: Decoding the Epigenetic Logic Behind Cancer
We spoke with Lei Xia, one of the new NORPOD Fellows about their ambitious research project, international collaborations, and what motivates their journey into cancer epigenetics and machine learning. Lei Xia is working with Esa Pitkänen at FIMM and Biswajyoti Sahu at NCMBM.

Brain Gain grant for AI research - returnee Professor Olli Kallioniemi takes the Finnish medical research field forward
Professor Olli Kallioniemi has been awarded a €2 500 000 Brain Gain grant for research into artificial intelligence in medicine. The five-year grant will enable Kallioniemi to establish a research group at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) at the University of Helsinki gradually, during 2024-2025.
